Most American stadium trips involve a negotiation: park here, walk there, shuttle, queue, repeat on the way home. Houston's is not like that. METRORail's Red Line runs from downtown straight to the stadium, and the station is called Stadium Park / Astrodome for a reason.
If you are visiting Houston for a match, this is the plan you want. Everything else is a complication you can skip.
The route
The Red Line follows Main Street through downtown and continues south to Stadium Park / Astrodome station at the southern end of the line. From downtown, the ride is roughly 25 to 30 minutes.
If you are coming from the Green or Purple lines, you transfer to the Red Line downtown and ride south. No bus, no shuttle, no second ticket type.
The fare has been $1.25 for a single ride. Check the current fare when you travel — Houston has been reviewing its fare structure — but whatever it is now, it is the cheapest part of your day by a wide margin.
Event service is the detail that matters
METRO adds trains for Texans home games and other stadium-sized events. That matters twice: once on the way in, when more frequent trains absorb the crowd, and once on the way out, when the platform fills in about 90 seconds.
If you are going to a match at NRG, check the event service notice for your date. It is usually a one-line confirmation, and it is worth the thirty seconds.
The park-and-ride trick
If you are driving into Houston anyway, Fannin South is the move. It is one stop from the stadium on the Red Line, it has a park-and-ride lot, and during major events every passenger in the vehicle has historically received a round-trip wristband for the train.
Published rates have been $25 to $50 for event parking, card only, with a $5 daily rate outside events. Confirm the current rate before you go.
The logic is simple: you pay for parking once, everybody in the car rides free to the stadium, and you skip the entire stadium traffic pattern.
The 30-minute rule
Be on the platform 45 minutes before kickoff rather than 30, because the walk from Stadium Park / Astrodome to the gates is real and the crowd on the platform before a big match is not small.
Trains run every six to twelve minutes in normal service and more often on event days. You will not wait long, but you will stand.
The exit problem
Houston's version of the exit problem is a platform, not a parking lot, and it is shorter than most. Trains load fast because there is no traffic to fight — the line is dedicated.
Two practical notes. First, walk to the far end of the platform; the front cars fill first and the back of the train is emptier. Second, if you are staying downtown, ride one stop past your hotel and walk back if the crush is bad. It is a five-minute walk and it beats standing still.
Rideshare and driving
Rideshare works and is priced accordingly on event days. The designated zones are away from the gates, which is correct and also means a walk.
Driving means stadium parking, and stadium parking on an event day means the queue you were trying to avoid. If you drive, buy the pass in advance and accept that the exit will take as long as it takes.
Food
Downtown Houston has the restaurants. The stadium district has the parking. Eat downtown before you ride, or eat inside. If you want the good version of the day, build a couple of hours downtown around the train ride rather than around the car.
If you are ten or more
Ten people on the Red Line is ten fares and one group chat that will lose two of them. If the group is coming from one place — a hotel, an airport, a tailgate — a single vehicle with one pickup time removes the least enjoyable part of the day.
Ten or more? One vehicle, one price, one pickup time.
Group rides to the stadium, the airport and the after-party. One quote, one driver, one pickup window that does not move. No surge, no five-car scavenger hunt at 11:40 PM.
The short version
Red Line to Stadium Park / Astrodome. That is the whole plan.
Check the event service notice for your date.
Driving in? Fannin South park-and-ride plus the train.
Be on the platform 45 minutes before kickoff.
Walk to the back of the train on the way out.
